Four-midable 'Mintcakes' helped by hat-trick hero Kiflin as Kendal sink Burscough

A devestating performance from Thomas Kiflin of Kendal Town, including a hat-trick, and a further strike from Sean Sailor booked Kendal Town's spot in next round of the Macron Cup, dispatching Burscough 4-1 at Bobby Langton Way.

In a high-tempo start to the contest, the ‘Linnets were behind and then level as two goals were scored within the opening ten minutes. Kendal opened the scoring after two minutes as great work by the ‘Mintcakes’ man set up Shaun Sailor in the area. The Kendal forward man was left wide open and a routine finish got Burscough off to a nightmare start.

Within several minutes, the hosts drew level and again more brilliant work down the flanks set up a goal. Monthe’s teasing ball and a calm finish by Chrissy Happi-Fankam brought the game back to square one.

Two goals in quick succession for Kendal saw them take a 3-1 lead after half an hour and both were scored by Thomas Kiflin. Firstly, Kiflin turned on the edge of the box and fizzed a beastly volley which drifted past a hapless Charles Monks and into the back of the net. Kiflin’s second and Kendal’s third came as he slid across the box to tuck past Monks.

The hosts never got going in the contest and when through on goal, were restricted to long-shots and plenty of frustrating cross-cum-shots and attempted crosses not materialising and in truth, the visitors from Cumbria, two goals up, continued to assert their dominance on the game.

Kiflin continued to look a threat and despite missing a golden chance after being slipped through after a ball across the face of goal, he missed a great chance from a header. A in-swinging set-piece was won by the ‘Mintcakes’ number 9 however, he couldn’t divert his header under the bar. He didn’t have to wait long for another goal as he chalked up his hat-trick and netted Kendal’s fourth of the net. Kiflin won the ball in the air and a speculative over-head kick left Monks stranded as it rippled the net.

The most likely to score for the rest of the tie was the visitors and only for some valiant defending from Burscough skipper Josh Dobie preventing Robinson in the nick of time, the ‘Mintcakes’ would have had their fifth.

From then the game died down, with neither keeper having to make a save of note as in emphatic style, Kendal booked their place in the next round of the Macron Cup.
