Marine progress in Liverpool Senior Cup after Pilkington battering
Second-half strikes from Andrew Scarisbrick, Sol Solomon, Mo Touray and Hayden Campbell secures Marine’s place in the next round of the Liverpool Senior Cup, defeating Pilkington 4-0 at the Marine Travel Arena.
The Northern Premier League side showed their over-riding qualities and took control of the tie from the first whistle. Chances by Jonathan Spittle and twice from Hayden Campbell were all threatening however, never hit the target.
Pilkington awoke and almost breathed Bayleigh Passant into life. Callum Laird splendidly gathered the ball and drove at the ‘Mariners’ however, as he took the shot it flashed across the face of goal and almost crept in.
After a slight scare, Marine regained control, with the ‘Pilks’ shot-stopper Jake Hilton being called into action plenty of times. Hayden Campbell and Sol Solomon were a constant threat for the hosts, causing Pilkington lots of problems on the attack. Campbell play Solomon in with a ball across the face, with the new ‘Mariners’ striker coming very close to netting. In an attacking sense, ‘Mariners’ full back Lucas Weir worked tirelessly and created plenty of openings. Weir saw a venomous strike beat away by Hilton before almost turning provider for Hayden Campbell and Mo Touray. After pinching the pockets of Chris Cottington for the visitors, Andrew Scarisbrick’s effort was smashed into the advertising boards and following on from that, Hilton was on top form. He splendidly denied efforts from Solomon three times, Scarisbrick and James Barrigan.
HT: Marine 0-0 Pilkington
Mo Touray seemed to be the man posing the ‘Greens’ the biggest threat at the beginning of the second period, forcing Jake Hilton into an un rare save before almost curling in. He took the ball far wide after being slipped through - he managed to rescue play before fizzing an effort just wide. Solomon also sprung Hilton into life with the Pilkington keeper being made to parry away. From this, Pilkington had a good go at attacking Bayleigh Passant’s abode.
Chris Lomax was sent clean through on his own with Passant and Luke Clark to beat. Lomax’s effort was valiantly denied by Clark, the ‘Mariners’ skipper. Clark was made to deny another shot, this time a stinging one from Adam Gilchrist. After the ‘Greens’ having a go at goal, Marine took control and soon found themselves in a goal-fest.
Marine took the lead on the hour mark as Andrew Scarisbrick was set up after a cut back from the perimeter of the penalty area. Scarisbrick took it first time and nestled into the back of the net, leaving a busy Hilton stranded.
It was two soon after and Scarisbrick this time turned provider. The former Bootle man splendidly picked out the run of Sol Solomon who made no mistake and calmly slotted into the corner of the net.
In the space of 5 minutes, Marine had netted their third and fourth goal of the evening. Mo Touray had his goal after being a ceaseless threat to the St. Helens based outfit and after some tricky footwork, showed no hesitation to place past Hilton before Campbell scored a caulker to round off proceedings. The Marine 7 cut inside from the edge of the area and fired a terrific curling shot into the top corner.
Pilkington were shell shocked from this and albeit a Callum Laird strike creeping across the face of goal, the ‘Greens’ never threatened the Marine goal. In fact, the ‘Mariners’ had effort to extend their already emphatic lead - with Campbell and Touray narrowly missing the target.
FT: Marine 4-0 Pilkington
