Ammies reach summit after Bevan’s strike defeats Cammell Lairds

Joe Bevan’s 75th-minute strike secured a place at the top of the North West Counties Division One South table for Wythenshawe Amateurs after defeating Cammell Lairds 1-0 at the KR Couriers & Transport Limited Stadium.

In a game that began with full  velocity with both sides full of confidence after the ‘Ammies’ sit second after a string of good result and ‘Lairds’ 5-1 victory on Saturday against Foley Mair, it was the visitors who almost drew first blood after Sam Adewusi’s golden chance being squandered in the opening minutes and for the ‘Cammell’s’ Ben Kerr’s effort was splendidly tipped away by Kyle Haslam. Despite this, the side in the ascendancy was Wythenshawe, with plenty of possession in the final third.

The game became end to end with some valiant blocks, clearances and plenty of corners coming but neither side created any clearcut chances until a late flurry in the half almost saw goals calved out for both teams. Wythenshawe could only send a wandering shot wide before the rest of the period was dominated by the hosts.

A scramble in the area was cleared off the line in the nick of time before a advancing ‘Lairds’ man could turn home before Jay Harvey was slipped through one-on-one with Kyle Haslam, but his shot trickled marginally wide of the post.

Chances were limited in the second period, although Cammell Laird constantly had to attempt to weather the Wythenshawe storm after threatening crosses before the visitors, aiming for the summit, dominated for a large period of the game from then.

A audacious long shot by Kieran Curtis drifted high over the crossbar before Joseph Bevan became a menace in the ‘Lairds’ penalty area. Daniel Stephens’ brilliant goal-line clearance denied the ‘Ammies’ 9 before he rifled a shot into the roof of the net, giving the visitors the breakthrough.

Bevan, looking for a second, left many Cammell Laird defenders in his wake as he twisted and turned in the area before guiding his shot marginally wide of the post before the hosts could feel hard done by after they had plenty of opportunities but never took a point. Kalif Koura volleyed over before he scuffed a shot wide of the mark after terrific Wythenshawe defensive work took the stings out the strike and this secured three points and took them to the top of the table after their hard-fought win.
