Wylie’s late header helps Purps to draw at Cables

A late Peter Wylie header, coupled up with a first-half strike by Kyle Sambor for the hosts, meant the shares were spoilt as Prescot Cables and City of Liverpool drew 1-1 at the Joseph Russell Stadium.

In a first half hour dry of any opportunities, Prescot Cables posed the biggest threat to Ben Barnes, making his debut after signing from Skelmersdale United, goal - and in particular - Kyle Sambor had effort on goal. One half chance was scuffed wide before he broke the deadlock just ten minutes before the break. The Cables forward done excellently to weave his way past Jack Hont and drive forward, and his eventual effort cannoned off an outstretched ‘Purps’ challenger and flew into the back of the net, leaving Barnes to watch in dismay.

Minutes later, Sambor would have been disappointed he didn’t double his and Cables’ advantage as a low drive by the Cables 11 forced the advancing Barnes to race out and parry away.

City of Liverpool ended the half with the ascendancy, as effort flew at the young Harvey Passant. Burke was a threat as he had two efforts for the ‘Purps’, one straight at Passant before a passage of effort included Burke seeing Passant splendidly save his effort, aswell as Danny Mitchley.

City of Liverpool started the second period blisteringly and had two effort thwarted on the line, averting the danger. Adam Hughes’ curling attempt was cleared by James Edgar before another attempt was cleared off the line, leading to the visitors believing it has crossed the line however, play continued.

Cables looked a threat after that, having multiple attempts on Ben Barnes’ abode. Declan Daniels powered a fearsome and looping header staring into the top corner however, a strong hand by Barnes kept it out before a passage of play saw Barnes produce three fine saves. John Murphy, Kyle Sambor and James Edgar’s efforts diverted goalwards kept Barnes on his toes.

The visitors piled on the pressure late on and forced Cables into unforced errors. Strickland’s free-kick needed a touch from a Purple man in the box to test Harvey Passant before a corner was won late on. The resulting corner was met by the compelling head of Peter Wylie, who nestles his nod into the back of the net, bringing the ‘Purps’ level.

The visitors weathered any late Prescot attacks and were unlucky not to win it at the end when Kevin Ellison rose highest to Jack Hont’s cross and almost got enough momentum to divert it in however, it flashed past the post and the points were shared.
