Wigan Athletic 3-2 Blackburn Rovers - Match Report

Aasgaard screamer sinks Blackburn

A wonder strike by Thelo Aasgaard helped Wigan on there way to a 3-2 win against high-flying Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup and sent the ‘Latics’ through to the Fourth Round of the competition.

Wigan came very close to taking an early lead, a great ball by Ton Pearce was just headed by wide by Will Keane. 

Blackburn’s first chance came from marksman Ben Brereton-Diaz, who lashed a shot over the crossbar. Another great chance for Rovers, John Buckley ran clear of the ‘Latics’ defence and Jamie Jones made himself big and denied a great goal. 

Blackburn thought they had took the lead, Brereton-Diaz rounding the Wigan goalkeeper, but the goal was chalked off for offside.  

Blackburn Rovers had the first chance of the second half. Tyrhys Dolan testing the keeper with a shot towards the near post, but danger was averted as the shot went wide. 

The away sides pressure eventually payed off as Reda Khadra hit a fierce shot which Jamie Jones could do nothing to stop Blackburn taking a deserved lead at the DW. 

Blackburn so nearly double their lead, great work between Joe Rothwell and Ben Brereton-Diaz and Rothwell shot was saved by Jones. 

Diaz had another great chance. His overhead effort went just wide. 

Arguably against the run of play, Wigan equalised. A long shot by Max Power sent the ‘Latics’ fans into jubilation. 

The goal sensed a reaction out of Wigan as they put pressure on Blackburn which forced the away side back.

Wigan eventually took the lead. Jack Whatmough looping header fell into Blackburn keeper Aynsley Peers, but somehow dropped it into the net. 

Wigan came close again. Callum Lang’s powerful volley was blazed over the bar. 

Out of nothing, Blackburn equalise. A great cross from a freekick was headed home. 

Right at the death, Wigan snatched it right from the grasps. A 30-yard wonder strike from Thelo Aasgaard secured Wigan’s place in the 4th round and sent the DW Stadium into raptures.
