I spoke with Prescot Cables captain Liam Hollett, reviewing his sides recent exit in the Liverpool Senior Cup 3-2 to Runcorn Linnets.
Me: Liam, 3-2 defeat to Runcorn Linnets in the Senior Cup tonight, what did you make of it.
Liam: I think anyone watching the game tonight can see the quality of both sides, Runcorn are a good side well organised. There wasnt much in the game between both side but i think lapses in concentration and mistakes cost us tonight. Both sides played great football and the goals scored shows that.
Me: You have played Linnets already this season, and beat them at home. Was this already a clear indication of what you were coming up against?
Liam: We always know when we play Runcorn it’s going to be a great battle with both teams wanting to get the ball down and play both good sides. Unfortunately tonight it never went our way but thats football! It’s always nice to be in the hat for the next round but we know our sole focus is on the league. Again we tried a different system tonight which was new to us and maybe going two one up we where a little bit naive and need to learn how to see the game out better bit the players who come in tonight performed well and again mistakes cost us.
Me: You had a tough battle with Ryan Brooke, probably one of the best strikers in the league, how tough, for you, was he actually?
Liam: You play against quality strikers in this league week in week out, take nothing away from him hes a great player but I don’t worry about who the strikers are what they have done is concentrate on my own game and not who your playing against. At the end of the days it’s two players playing against each other it’s always a battle.
Me: Being 2-1 up with only 5 minutes to go and losing 3-2, how disappointing is that?
Liam: You can accept getting beat if you play poorly, but when you get beat in the manner which we have tonight when there wasn’t much in the game, it is a bit of a blow - especially when its down to poor decision making and mistakes what cost you. On the other hand, we have come so far as a team from where we were a year ago to and today just shows that two very good teams going at it.
Me: You guys get to bounce back at home against Clitheroe, how much have you looked into how they play and your overall views on the game?
Liam: We take each game as it comes, the management do there homework on each team as the fixtures come up through out the season but at the end of the day, its down to us on the day to perform and get the points. We dont fear any team we take each game as it comes and we are capable of beating anyone.
