Breck left to rue missed opportunities as Squires Gate leave with three points

Lower Breck continued their dreadful start to 2022 as Squires Gate left Anfield Sport Centre with all three points to gladly take back to Blackpool as the Breck missed an abundance of chances in what was the story of their match.

The first chance fell at the hands of the home side. Sean Miller smashed a powerful shot over the crossbar. More early pressure from Lower Breck as Stephen Milne rounded the Gate goalkeeper and his weak shot was cleared off the line by the defender. The Breck would be frustated as more chances went to the waste. Firstly, Warren Gerrard cut inside and curled a shot just wide of the far right. Then two chances arrived for Stephen Milne, the Breck nine was sent through for a one-on-one with the Squires Gate keeper Alex McLachlan, who made himself big and managed to keep it out. Then Milne slashed at a dropping ball only to be blocked by the defence of the away side.

Against the run of play, Squires Gate took the lead. Wealth Dasilva-Olajide turned back on himself and fired home the opener after an incisive move from the visitors.

Squires Gate had a great chance to double the lead after coming into the game after their opener. Dean Ing ran in behind the two Breck centre backs and his first shot from a narrow angle was parried away by Ellis Litherland-Riding, then his follow up strike was again splendidly saved by the Lower Breck goalkeeper.

Lower Breck gained the upperhand from then and following some brilliant footwork by Kieran Holsgrove to get away from the outrushing Gate backline, his shot was sent frustratingly straight at McLachlan. Breck equaliser came on the stroke of half-time. Sean Miller smashed into the roof of the net to grab the home side a deserved equaliser on the balance of play.

Lower Breck started the second half brightly and a great passage of play almost saw them lead. Kieran Holdsgrove had the first effort, which was saved low by Alex McLachlan, it came back to Breck’s number ten who sliced his shot which fell to the first goalscorer Sean Miller who crossed to the far post to Stephen Milne but the keeper caught the ball before Milne could head home.

Squires Gate created a pathway into the game and had some great chances to take the lead. A great freekick by Gate was just headed onto the top of the net by Dean Ing, a few great last-ditch blocks by the Breck back-line and a header took its toll before the Lancastrians took the lead. This time a header from a set-piece payed off for Squires Gate, with Josh Westwood heading home.

Straight away after the goal, Squires Gate nearly scored again with Dean Ing trying his luck from 30-yards, but his audacious effort flew metres wide of the target. Ing seemed to be trying his luck from distance constantly and another curling efforts was sent heading into the same corner as his first effort, with it touching a Breck player on the way out, going behind for a corner. Ryan Riley came closest from a non-scoring opportunity, as his authorative free-kick from the perimeter of the D shook the crossbar. Substitute Joshua Okan rounded off the scoring as he paced his way through the Lower Breck defence and slotted past Ellis Litherland-Riding.

This game was really a tale of missed chances for Lower Breck as more late chances was scrambled away by a compact Squires Gate defence and Alex McLachlan was in action late on too.
