Bears leave it late to maul battling Breck
Ethan Hartshorn’s 90th-minute winner sparked wild scenes at Anfield Sports, as Congleton came from behind to sink Lower Breck.
The game hadn’t picked up any pace or rhythm despite the ball being in Congleton’s final third for the most part. Despite this, it was the hosts who drew first blood.
Jawad Jebrin, fresh off receiving an award, shifting onto his right foot before firing a low drive into the corner to hand the hosts the breakthrough.
Congleton still had the ball in their half firmly, with the ceaseless threat of their long ball getting them into threatening positions, but nothing was materialising for them until the final minute of the first period, when the ‘Bears’ were back on level terms.
‘Breck’ had resolutely defended warning shots that had flew their way initially, but the dangerous Daniel Needham picked the loose ball up and struck with venom. This fortunately drilled through all bodies and past Theo Roberts into the net as Congleton equalised.
Lower Breck saw a free-kick saved before the break, before Congleton were convinced they’d score the goal which put them in front, but when the officials judged it not to have crossed the line, the ‘Bears’ faithful were incandescent.
The ball was bundled forward which required Theo Roberts to scoop it out, with the Congleton men racing with their hands in the air to signal how they felt about the ball crossing the line. Eventually, the half-time whistle blew and the visitors protests long into the break.
HT: Lower Breck 1-1 Congleton Town.
Congleton began the second half as they ended the first, with aerial’s in the air proving to be their biggest weapon.
Veteran striker Tom Pope was presented an opportunity from one, but a flick-on header left Theo Roberts relatively un-phased.
A second shot seemingly crossed the line for the visitors, but yet again the man in the middle and his counterparts waved it away, much to the dismay of the ‘Bears’ faithful.
Lower Breck whipped many balls agonisingly across the ball, with only a touch required to divert the ball home, but on several occasions it never.
Tom Pope squandered another header until one header from the visitors paid off, as they netted the winner with the final kick of the game.
Ethan Hartshorn raced towards the front post to meet a firm corner and his rocket of a header left Roberts hapless in his attempt to claw it away, as the ‘Bears’ chalked up three points in the most dramatic fashion.
FT: Lower Breck 1-2 Congleton Town.
