Breck outshine disappointing Bury

Goals from Tom Williams and Jamie Menagh succumbed Bury to their second defeat of the season and left the three points back in Anfield as a spirited Lower Breck beating the visiting Bury 2-0 in a performance worthy of the result and a score line that was merited.

Lower Breck started the contest the better of the two sides, starting off with a Michael Monaghan cross-turned-shot dashed marginally wide of the far post before the hosts made an early breakthrough. A inswinging free-kick was met by Tom Williams who’s compelling header nestled into the corner of the net and out of the reach of the diving Jack Atkinson.

Bury’s non-stop onslaught on the Breck began as they laid seige on Theo Roberts’ goal. Some valiant defending by the hosts denied one move, before a further three courtesy of Lewis Gilboy, Niall Cummins and a foolhardy over-head attempt by Joseph Denman breathed life into Theo Roberts, with Roberts thwarting all shots that came his way, aswell as some half-chances that went wasting for the visitors.

Bury started the second half as they ended the first, with constant pressure on the Breck defence. Harry Brazel brushed through a herd of Breck defenders and a scuffed clearance rebounded off a hapless Brazel but luckily for Lower Breck, Theo Roberts was there to deny the chance.

Breck themselves almost found themselves doubling their lead when Jamie Menagh sprung the offside trap to drill a ball to Michael Monaghan who’s heel flick was sensationally curbed by the legs of Jack Atkinson.

It was two soon after for the hosts, when Monaghan was fouled in the box, which left Jamie Menagh to step-up and place it past Jack Atkinson. Menagh’s penalty was converted, sending Atkinson the wrong way.

Breck had a few half-chances on goal, the most meaningful was through Stephen Milne’s powerful shot being denied in the nick of time. Nevertheless, the best Breck effort was when Tom McNamara was sent through, staring down one-on-one with Atkinson, however the strike was by McNamara couldn’t beat Atkinson who got a strong hand to it.

Despite Bury’s best efforts to reduce the arrears, there goal never game. Their last clear-cut chance came in the form of a diverted header by Jonathan Hunt being successfully headed off the line and onto the bar by a springing Jonathan Swatton.
