Avro turn up heat on title race after defeating spirited Litherland REMYCA
Courtney Meppen-Walter’s strike midway through the second half secured a huge three points for Avro - battling for the NWCFL supremacy - after scraping past Litherland REMYCA in a very hard-fought and valiant display from the visitors from Oldham.
The visitors started brightest in an otherwise slow start to the encounter - with Enoch Likoy blazing an effort over the bar before Avro had the ball in the net, but it never counted. Meppen-Walter bundled the ball beyond Samuel Morton in the REMY net however, the game was halted due to a foul on Morton - cutting short Avro’s premature celebrations.
REMY awoke as Oliver Nugent diverted a shot wide and Lewis Sinnot’s free-kick was cleared off the line in the nick of time before the visitors regained control.
Jamie Rother blazed wide before a great chance calved out was marginally squandered. Jordan Southworth’s in-swinging corner was nodded just wide by Geffry Eshote.
HT: Litherland REMYCA 0-0 Avro
The visitors made the perfect start to the second half - taking the lead just 10 minutes into the period. Jamie Rother’s teasing delivery found an unmarked Meppen-Walter, who bundled beyond Sam Morton.
Litherland REMYCA reacted to going behind by laying siege on Avro’s abode. An effort from the hosts via a looping shot from the edge of the area was agonisingly cleared off the line and an effort from Anthony Williams striking the post - as it seemed that it was going to be one of those games for the REMY where nothing would go in.
Avro had a brief spell of testing Morton - with Ethan Sutcliffe’s mazy run resulting in him getting a shot off, but Morton was able to gather.
The REMYCA faithful would be forgiven for scratching their head as to how they never claimed their equaliser. Three efforts - including strikes from Lewis Sinnott and Tom Lawless - were saved by Shelton as the visitors saw out a massive victory in there own rights.
FT: Litherland REMYCA 0-1 Avro
